The Designs of Distinction (DOD) competition recognized the best of the best for categories in a kitchen and bath design at the Awards Gala held at Summerour Studio in October 2018. The first place award for the Large Bathroom Category was given to Becky Sue Becker a Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD) and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS).

Becker is the owner and principal designer of Designs by BSB based in Lawrenceville, Georgia. By using her 29 years of experience and training she transformed an 80’s bathroom into a luxurious, warm master retreat for homeowners Mark & Ellen Warner who live in Chattahoochee River Club Subdivision in Cumming Georgia. The Warner’s requested a room that they could gracefully age in and to include better storage for small toiletries, lotions & potions, tailored cabinetry to allow for a seated makeup vanity and a fully accessible shower with superior water experiences and lastly a sauna.

Level One Construction based out of Roswell, Georgia, a highly respected remodeling firm and valued trade partner of BSB was hired to implement the intricate design. Their expertise was vital in achieving a room for Warner’s to love where they live.

This inaugural design competition was held for members of the Georgia Chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA).

A 3′ x 6′ custom-designed Helo Sauna is a unique surprise in this master retreat! The Nordic white spruce on the walls are paired with abachi wood for the benches and the backrest does not retain heat! The wall space above the sauna door was a perfect location for a burst of color in a creative piece of art done by the homeowner himself.

Natural cherry cabinetry was chosen for its warm & traditional value. Robern medicine cabinets are recessed in the custom wainscot trim work. The full-height doors at each end have Rev-a-shelf vanity pullouts with divided storage and adjustable heights for toiletries. The stunning sconces by Crystorama add a touch of elegance.

This custom makeup vanity includes a cherry tip-up top with a mirror and divided storage for makeup and accessories. The shower uses a VIM® floor system for curbless entry.

A teak bench with an independently controlled hand shower with grab bars gives the homeowner assurance they will age here gracefully.

A sliding door system by CRLaurence was chosen for ease of use and to eliminate door swings. •••

Bathroom Safety with Style

Regarding bathroom safety, we often think of boring grab bars and industrial-looking fixtures. But it’s time to change that perception.
