The client is working through their budget and discussing the cost variables of the grills and ventilation with one of my most valuable trade partners, Sewell Appliance in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Since they were the providers for all their appliances in their new home in Atlanta 2 years ago, they were the natural go to source! So next in line for consideration is the cabinets and counter tops.
Outdoor cabinets might sound like no big deal, but when you break down the logistics.. err conditions in which they will (or will not) tolerate, the decision needs to be carefully considered. As any investment should, especially when the design has a built-in configuration. There are options, but the pros and cons vary more than the investment itself.
Proposal for consideration — all products would be installed on leveling legs so that the cabinet sides are not compromised when there is standing water at the base.
- Solid 3/4" marine-grade polymer that is 100% impervious to water. Maintence free. Hardware free interlocking joints and even the drawer slide has no ball bearings subjected to debris. Lifetime warranty.
- Stainless Steel which resist stains and corrosion. Constructed of #4 brushed finish (same as appliances). 2 year warranty
- Local custom built cabinets: constructed of exterior grade plywood and solid white oak fronts with an oil finish. One year guarantee.
- Powder Coated Aluminum with a Lifetime warranty. Doors have seals to keep bugs out… along with most weather conditions!
So 1. and 2. price out within 1% of each other (high $8k) while local custom falls behind mid $6k and the aluminum falls in the $5k. All prices including tax, delivery and installation. How does one choose? Budget ? Warranty? Maintenence? How about style – stainless and wood is gorgeous, timeless. So does that mean more than the durability and warranty of polymer or aluminum? Decisions .. decisions..
Then there are counter tops! Stainless? Granite? …. now the numbers are shocking with cabinets and appliances, because this client is looking for the best value, but maybe even more important – a product that will last. Stainless steel counter tops for the bar and granite for the grill area are budgeted at $6500 including delivery, installation, counter top supports. For now, its time to sleep on this!
