The first draft of the bar area shows an island with a raised bar area for guests to enjoy a game on tv (hanging on back wall) Rather than have numerous base cabinets, a tall storage was placed in the corner — with thoughts of maybe a Coca-Cola replica cooler in the lower section. A stainless steel table was designed on the back wall allowing a landing space for coolers, etc. from the main house.
First thought was for a peninsula positioned off the window wall but a) the windows are too low and b) it would not allow for "bar height" stools which are typically more desirable in an entertaining atmosphere. Guests can sit or stand next to each other and converse comfortably.
The kitchen is shown with a Whirlpool Gladiator Refrigerator (rated for garage use at the least) .. a 2 burner cooktop and a sink. There is not a need for an abundance of cabinets, so the wall cabinets are kept short across for a clean look.
Question on the table is …. worth having a sink? It is not allowed by Lake Officials, and no soap could be used. A pump would carry lake water up to the sink, and a drain would simply put the gray water back. So it could not be used for anything more than rinsing hands or getting a rag wet for cleanup.
After the above rought drafts were presented and the client throughly thought through how they imagined this area will be used – some big changes took place quickly! For one, the deck on the furtherest portion of the boat house would not be adequate for grilling space. So rather than designing a full kitchen inside the full kitchen was changed to a grilling area.
Below is an overview of the floor plan with these changes in mind. Click on the image to view larger.
With the grill now taking over the kitchen, the refrigerator needed to be relocated to the bar area — eliminating the tall storage cabinet. Sacrifices to the design to some degree, but this plan undoubtedly fulfills more of their needs list.
Suggested finishes for this area are stainless steel counter tops with the knee wall under bar to match perimeter walls. Cabinets in island/bar to match kitchen.
The kitchen is now an amazing grilling area. Shown here with a 36" Grill — as of now being specified as an Alfresco Artisan Grill PLUS a single side burner to the left. Sink was eliminated as the convenience was not worth the risk, nor the cost. Utensil strap on the wall will keep spatula and other commonly used items in easy reach. A spice shelf on the right along with a paper towel holder will help the counters be less cluttered.
Counter tops are suggested to be granite with a 4-6" high splash at the sides and a full height splash behind the grill area. This being much easier to maintain around the grill zone.
Cabinets are currently being quoted. Local custom wood – marine grade polymer – stainless steel are all being considered.
Ventilation is one of the most critical elements with this design. While the windows will be screened, having a roof overhead and a good portion being contained, taking short cuts here is not advised. A powerful Vent-A-Hood is being specified… More details to come!
