2009 Kitchen & Bath Trends

Want to know what the hottest trends in kitchens and baths are in 2009? The NKBA Design Competition received 678 entries, and after searching through all of them, the NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association) selected ten design elements that clearly stood out.

“The trends spotted in this year’s competition are a great example of what’s to come in kitchen and bath design,” said Suzie Williford, President, National Kitchen and Bath Association. “Each new trend will help turn a room into a well-designed, classic space.”

Based on the review of the design competition entries, the NKBA offers the top kitchen and bath trends for 2009:

Steel Counters
Stainless steel is emerging as a new countertop favorite in kitchen design by creating a sleek, modern look that ties in perfectly with stainless steel appliances. Its part of a styling trend which combines the ingredients of a commercial-style kitchen with the warmth of cherry cabinets and natural stone floor, creating a room that is efficient, yet comfortable.
Black and White Kitchens
Eschewing color, dramatic black and white color schemes are becoming the norm with its contrast to one another in both value and sheen. The versatility and functional design create visual interest while blending together for a simple feeling.
Mirror, Mirror Off The Wall
Flush-mounted bathroom wall mirrors are starting to yield to more creative placements. We’re seeing mirrors creatively popping up as freestanding furniture pieces, including back-to-back mirrors, sinks and faucets to provide a clear his-and-hers space.
Resin Panels
Tile and stone backsplashes are still popular but this year we’re seeing a number of designs with backsplashes made of interesting items such as fabric, mesh and bamboo, encased in plastic panel. These items create a unique look that complements the accents and countertops.
Tin Ceilings
Tin ceilings are being increasingly used to add more visual to kitchens and symmetrical focal points.
Floating Cabinets
To create a cleaner, more open feel, many of the latest bathroom designs are eliminating cabinet legs and toe kicks in favor of floating, wall-mounted units. This leaves a large open area beneath the cabinet that makes the room feel more spacious.
Stone Hearths

Huge, dramatic hearths made of natural stone are becoming more common in kitchens.
Shoji Screens
The Asian-influenced shoji screen is now gaining popularity in a number of kitchen designs as they provide separation between kitchens and other living spaces when needed, while still allowing light to pass through.
Chrome Is Back
After years of yielding to finishes like brushed nickel and oil-rubbed bronze, polished chrome is making a comeback, particularly in bathrooms.
Glass Elements
The use of glass was very prominent in the kitchens seen in 2009, but not in traditional places. Glass is turning up in countertops and backsplashes.

NKBA Ambassador Club Recognition

NKBAlogo_NameRight_BlkLowRes

The National Kitchen & Bath Association seeks to recognize members of the NKBA who have added to the growth of our Association by bringing in new members. In appreciation of their continuing efforts, we induct them into the NKBA Ambassadors’ Club.
The success of the NKBA Ambassadors’ Club is attributed to more than 160 members who have recruited over 4,000 new members into the NKBA. These recruiters receive national recognition through this website, as well as in Profiles Magazine.
On April 30, 2009, I received recognition for a higher level of achievement at the NKBA Chapter Officers’ Forum/Ambassadors’ Club Luncheon held at K/BIS. In 2005 I was inducted into the Club and now I proudly stand amongst the top twenty percent of achievers!

KBIS ’09 – Industry Trade Show

KBIS logoOnce again I had took advantage of the great opportunity to attend the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (K/BIS) this past week.   The event took place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and featured more than 600 exhibitors and co-exhibitors!   While the show was significantly smaller, surely a product of the economic times, I still found great value investing my time.  Due to the downsize, I found myself to spend more quality time with the exhibitors. I have always valued this show as it delivers the best opportunity to preview the most current trends and product introductions. Stay tuned to more blogs in the near future on the products that peeked my interest!

KBIS2

Kitchens are the true heart of the home and homeowners are spending more time and money making this the place where family and friends gather most often. The bathroom today is also considered one of the most essential rooms because of its value as a personal retreat for homeowners. K/BIS is the leading industry event to showcase the products that change the kitchen and bath through their innovation and ability to meet the needs of the marketplace.

HuckabeeOne of my favorite moments was the opening Keynote Speaker, former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee.  He delivered a speech that was entertaining and inspiring as he spoke on leadership and values.

The conference packages, seminars and stage presentations by NKBA were all inspiring and educational. Next year it will move back to Chicago’s own McCormick Place in April.

Award Winning Kitchen by BSB

The Georgia Chapter of NKBA announced the winning entries of their inaugural statewide Design Competition at the Calla Awards on May 16, 2008 at an invitation only, black-tie event held at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta.  Judged by certified kitchen and bath professionals from the NKBA Carolinas Chapter, the winners were recognized with this prestigious award for their adherence to the national planning guides with access standards for kitchen and bath design as set forth by the NKBA.

Amongst the winning entries is a kitchen design by Becky Sue Becker, CKD of Designs by BSB.  The project was designed for a traditional home in the Midtown area of Atlanta, Georgia.   The kitchen received 1st place in the Large Kitchen Catagory and will be featured in the upcoming Atlanta Home Magazine and TRENDS publications.

Homeowners, contemplating a kitchen or bath remodel or new construction, need to know why national design standards are important to their new design and their impact on the functionality of their new living space. Clients tend to focus on the aesthetic aspects of their new kitchen or bath and it is our responsibility as professionals to combine beauty with the important technical elements for functionality, universal design and safety.

Large Kitchen Winning Entry – Design Statement

A stunning large kitchen to entertain family and friends was on the top of the client’s wish list. Soft white cabinets with a warm glaze offer a calming atmosphere, while the use of furniture elements, such as turned posts, valance toe boards, heavy base board and corbels, along with a cherry island gave the kitchen a traditional feel.

The open floor plan easily accommodated two islands – allowing adequate room for guests to serve beverages, help prep or simply visit comfortably at the furthest island, while others could attend to serious cooking activities along the main back wall without congestion. The use of all Viking stainless steel cooking and refrigeration appliances gives a stage presence that this client is serious about cooking and entertaining. With double microwaves, ovens and warming drawers they are assured to fill any order, in a timely fashion – and hot!

Interior accessories were not overlooked. An abundance of pull out spice racks, double trash bins, tray storage, cutlery dividers and pull out pantry system gives the client all the right tools to keep a well organized kitchen.

Details were kept simple to avoid a cluttered look in this large kitchen. Emphasis was placed on the symmetrical balance of all the elements in the design, including the heavy beams on the ceiling, stainless steel appliances and dual islands. The iron pot rack gave the strongest focal and offered a staple to the center balance of the room. In the end the clients’ order was filled – being presented with a warm and engaging space that caters to their every need and want!
